Ben is the fourth baker to own the bakery after Alf’s son John and John’s employee Stephen Webber. With 29 years of experience, he’s got flour in his veins. “I’ve always worked with bread, it’s something I’ve always done.”
The bakery is filled with machinery, and while some is new, a lot of it is over 50 years old. Ben swears by the almost antique gear.
“The old machines are always better than the new. They are more reliable, and they handle so much more volume.”
The Humble Pie is in high demand. At the peak of footy season, the bakery produces over 15 000 pies a week, which travel up to 400 km radius of the bakery. In addition to the original recipe, the bakery also pumps out 23 gourmet varieties.
Recently, the bakery upgraded from an individual packaging system, to a flow packaging system to improve the efficiency of the manufacturing process. With the help of Veridia, Ben was able to find a solution that provided all this, while delivering extra profit to the bottom line.
Ben depends on the partnership of suppliers to take his Bakery to the next level. With plans for growth in the future, including sending his pies into new territory, Ben will have even less time on his hands for sourcing products, as he focuses on the goals for his company. As he says, in his own words:
“Veridia is really good. They know what I’m looking for. They’re always searching out a solutions for me. I haven’t got time to look after [sourcing packaging consumables] – but they’re really good at it.”
