How Often Should You Replace Your Cleaning Supplies?

Cleaning Supplies

What is routine surface cleaning and when do cleaning supplies need to be replaced? Cleaning procedures in aged care focus on disinfection and sanitisation of high-touch surfaces like countertops, toilets and doorknobs, just to name a few.

While day-to-day cleaning in aged care facilities is of course the top priority, it’s also important to keep in mind the cleaning, and eventual replacement, of equipment and supplies. Veridia’s team of aged care hygiene experts have put together these recommendations for cleaning supply replacement to ensure world-class cleanliness and care.

Mops

Mops are at the top of the list of physical cleaning equipment, although they do need to be replaced after obvious wear and tear appears. When used for cleaning aged-care facilities, mops may last for just a few months, depending on how often they are used. Remember that the mop head will greatly affect its overall longevity. Cotton mop heads usually need to be replaced after 40-50 washes, while microfibre can last for up to 400 washes or even more if cleaned properly.

Brooms

Much like mops, brooms and floor brushes also have a limited life cycle, and you will want to replace them once the bristles or strands show noticeable wear. If there are large gaps between the bristles, cleaning efficiency will decrease, and it may be time to invest in new equipment. To avoid replacing brooms or floor brushes prematurely, make sure to check for debris after each use. Many newer brooms feature a comb for detangling bristles, so an upgrade may be worthwhile.

Cleaning Cloths

Long-lasting microfibre cleaning cloths can be used for years without replacement, while standard dishcloths and washcloths need to be replaced more frequently. Once a cleaning cloth loses its absorbency and becomes thin and ragged, it’s time for a replacement. The same goes for dish sponges and brushes, which will eventually start to fall apart after continued use.

Toilet Brushes

Toilet brushes are essential to aged care bathroom hygiene, but their constant use means you’ll likely go through a few brushes every year. Once the bristles are significantly worn down or they start falling off, it’s best to get a new toilet brush. Also, keep in mind that these brushes will last longer if they are washed after use. We recommend soaking the brush head for 30 minutes in a mix of liquid detergent, bleach and boiling water to keep it clean.

Chemical Solutions

Knowing when to replace chemical solutions can be a little trickier, as it depends on the brand and quality. If you notice significant discolouration or an unusual odour that wasn’t there before, it may be time to replace cleaning chemicals. Always check the expiration date and consider replenishment management solutions that can help monitor this for you, so you don’t lose out on valuable supplies.
